Why You Need to Know the 10 Commandments

This week, I have something a little different for you. I have been planning on writing a post about the 10 Commandments, and I remembered my sister, Shipwreck Samantha, actually made a video about it.

In her video, she says it’s important to know what the 10 Commandments are and what they all mean. She also includes visuals that will help you learn and remember what each commandment is. Those are the very same pictures that she and I used while learning them when we were little. So, watch the video above to learn more about the 10 Commandments, and please check out my sister’s YouTube channel, Shipwreck Samantha, and be sure to subscribe. She posts lots of fun and creative videos.

To collaborate with her video, I’m going to share a little more information about the 10 Commandments.

In Exodus 20, we find God telling Moses what to say to the Israelites, and He gives them what we call the 10 commandments. This was God’s law for His people that they were supposed to keep.

The problem is no one is perfect. Galatians 2:16 says, “…by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified,” and James 2:10 says, “For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.” We are incapable of keeping the Law perfectly, and salvation doesn’t come through the Law. It’s only through faith in Christ that we will be saved because of His atoning sacrifice on the cross.

So, why do we need to know the 10 Commandments today? Because “through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.” (Romans 3:20) Paul says, “Yet if it had not been for the Law, I would not have known sin.” (Romans 7:7) You could say the 10 Commandments act as a mirror. It shows us that we are sinful and unable to live up to God’s standard. Knowing that makes the knowledge of Christ’s death and resurrection even more amazing.

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. — Romans 5:8

The 10 Commandments are so important to know, and they are easy to memorize with the visuals my sister includes in her video. I challenge you to learn and memorize all 10 Commandments if you haven’t already.
