Do you know the story of the golden calf? Moses went up on Mt. Sinai to hear from God and was up there for 40 days. The Israelites grew impatient, so they told Aaron to build them a god. He built them a golden idol that looked like a calf, and the Israelites worshiped it (Exodus 32).
Do you ever wonder how they could do that? How could they turn their backs on God repeatedly after He delivered them from slavery? Why were they prone to wander? Who would do such a thing?
Every single person.
Ever since sin entered the world, everyone has been born sinners who repeatedly turn their back on God. It wasn’t just something the Israelites did. We’ve all done it.
It is only by the grace of God that we are able to love Him. It is only through Him that we have faith in Him and know Him. It is only by His power that we can overcome our sinful selves and run towards God, instead of away from Him.
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; — Ephesians 2:8
We are all born with our backs to God, but it is by grace that we are saved and turn to Him. Our faith is a gift from God. Born depraved with no way to save ourselves, it is a wonderful and awe inspiring thing that He chose to save us when He had every just reason to judge and punish us.
In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses according to the riches of His grace which He lavished on us. — Ephesians 1:7-8
We are not any better than the Israelites. We have rebelled against God repeatedly just like they did. But there is forgiveness in the grace of God if we repent of our sins and turn back to God.
