“If you cannot do great things, do small things in a great way.” – Napoleon Hill
A lot of people want to make a difference in the world or be remembered for doing something great. I know I would certainly like to make a difference before the end of my time here on earth. Many people, myself included, have great dreams and aspirations for changing the world.
Often though, we find countless obstacles standing in our way. I’m not talking about things that we use as an excuse for quitting when it gets hard. I mean things that are outside of our own control. Maybe you’re not old enough to go on that mission trip you wanted to join, or maybe you don’t have enough money to build an orphanage for kids. Whatever it is, it doesn’t have to be the end of our desire to make a difference.
Somewhere along our search for ways to make a big difference, I think we miss that small things can make a big difference. We often think making a difference has to be something huge like raising $100,000 dollars to build wells in Africa. But doesn’t volunteering to cut your neighbor’s grass make a difference to them? Or what about treating your sibling to lunch or cleaning the house for your parents without being asked? While you might not change the world with a clean house, you are still making a huge difference for the people in your life. You’re showing them that you care for them. The possibilities are endless for serving those in your life right now.
What ever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men…” — Colossians 3:23
The Bible tells us to work hard with the tasks we are given. It’s only when we learn to be diligent in the little things that we will be able to do big things. Think of the little things like your chores as a training ground for one day making a difference in the lives of more people.
And if you find an opportunity to make a big difference, go for it! I have a friend who is 12 years old, and she set a goal to raise $7,000 for the UGA Miracle League in honor of her brother. And she raised more than her goal of $7,000! You are never too young or too old to make a difference, big or small.
