3 Tips for Memorizing Scripture

3 Tips for Memorizing Scripture

Since Joshua wrote a great series on the importance of Scripture memorization, I thought I would follow that up with some ways that I work on memorizing (and retaining) Scripture on a regular basis.

If you missed Joshua’s series on why Christians should memorize Scripture, you can go back and read them here:

3 Tips for Memorizing Scripture

1. Read the Scripture Daily

This is something Joshua and I both do when we are working on memorizing Scripture, whether it’s one verse or a whole chapter. Read the verse(s) at least once a day, and over time, you will be able to recall the Scripture.

Just don’t forget to learn the Scripture reference as well. When you share that verse with someone to encourage, challenge, or teach them, you will want to be able to tell them where in the Bible it is so that they can go back and read it for themselves.

2. Helpful Reminders

It’s all to easy to forget to work on our Scripture memorization during our busy days, and Joshua and I have both found that the best time to do it is first thing in the morning, whether you’re working on Scripture memorization, praying, or studying the Bible. If you do it first, you can work on it before your busy day gets in the way. Plus, what better way to start your day than reading from God’s Word?

If you’re still having a hard time remembering, set a reminder on your phone, or write the verse on your bathroom mirror with a dry erase marker. You can also write the verse(s) on an index card and leave it somewhere you will see it every day. You can put it in your car, on the inside of the cabinet where you keep your coffee, or on a door. You can be creative with it.

3. There’s an App for That

Yes, there are many apps to help you memorize Scripture, and the one I use is called Memverse. You can also access it from your computer at www.memverse.com. It is free, and your account syncs between the computer and your phone, allowing you to practice your verses either way and not lose progress.

Memverse allows you to pick the translation you want to learn, and it has options to work on the verse or the reference so that you learn both. It keeps track of your progress for each verse based on a number scale that you use to rate how well you remembered that verse. Memverse has different options for how you learn, giving you little prompts or allowing you to look at the whole verse if you need help.

It is encouraging to be able to see progress as you work towards memorizing more and more Scriptures, so maybe finding an app or a different way to measure your progress will help you stay focused and on task. Find the way that works best with how you learn things and start memorizing Scripture.

There aren’t any tricks or secrets to memorizing Scripture. You just have to make it a priority in your life and put the time in to work on it. I hope Joshua’s series helped you understand why it is so important for Christians to retain what the Bible says, and it is my prayer that you will take the time to memorize Scripture.
