Love in Action

Love in Action - A Rising Generation

Valentine’s Day was yesterday, and regardless of your current relationship status, love is a small word that plays a big part in our lives. We love our favorite movies, and we love our favorite foods. We love our family and friends, we are loved by them. The list of ways we use that word goes on.

If you’re a Christian, you know you are also loved unconditionally by your Lord and Savior, and it is my hope that you love Him too. But Christ didn’t just look down on us from heaven and say, “I love them.” He showed us how much He loves us when He came to earth as a man, lived a perfect life, bore our sins on the cross, and rose again three days later. Christ lived out the love He said He had for us.

We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. — 1 John 3:16

When Christ laid down His life, not only was He rescuing us from our sin but He was also setting an example for us of what true love looks like. It’s love in action. As C. S. Lewis said, “Love is not affectionate feeling, but a steady wish for the loved person’s ultimate good as far as it can be obtained.” I just love that quote. Love is lived out in our actions and shown in the way we treat the people around us.

Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth. — 1 John 3:18

Don’t just treat them to a nice dinner and a dozen roses once a year; show them every single day that you love them. Show others the love and mercy that Christ showed you, and show it to them 365 days a year just as Christ does.

And don’t just show love to the people you like. Show love even to the people you don’t know or don’t even like. You can show them Christ’s love by being kind to a stranger and having mercy on the people you don’t like. That’s love in action.

Remember, buying them a gift or taking them to dinner aren’t the only ways to show love towards others. The words you say can be kind or belittling, and you can have an attitude of annoyance or patience, which will show whether or not you are loving others.

This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us. — 1 John 3:23

God’s Word commands us to love others, and it’s up to us to choose whether or not we will obey Him. If we believe in the name of His Son and are abiding in Him, we will want to love others because of our love for God and the much greater love He has for us. Always remember that the way you live your life every day says something about the God you believe in and proclaim to follow. Love with your words, and love with your actions too.
